Pura Vida, Deep Connection, and Lasting Healing in Costa Rica

We’ve just returned from CCJ’s Pura Vida Costa Rica Healing Retreat, and the transformation is still palpable. Led by CCJ’s own Kat Sorensen, who guided the group with wisdom and warmth, the journey offered far more than just relaxation—it was a deep reset for body, mind, and soul. Kat’s gentle, daily yoga sessions grounded us each morning, helping us arrive more fully in the moment and in ourselves. Inspired by these nourishing practices, everyone on the tour left with a renewed commitment to continue their yoga journey back home.

From a small-town Easter mass and local procession through the streets, to waterfall plunges, sound baths, massages, and zip lining through the jungle canopy, each day was filled with moments of connection and joy. Travelers embraced Costa Rica’s abundant natural beauty—and drank it in, literally. Throughout the country, water flows fresh from the mountains and straight from the tap, a rare and refreshing gift that mirrors the nation’s deep respect for nature and sustainability.

A special moment during the retreat was introducing a healing modality I myself have facilitated for over a decade. In an intimate circle, guests experienced their first taste of Family Constellation work—an exploration of ancestral patterns and hidden dynamics. The outdoor venue, the retreat center's yoga shala, nestled deep in the jungle, provided an extraordinary connection to “the Field,” allowing healing and insight to flow with grace.

Much of the retreat’s magic stemmed from our stay at AmaTierra, a laid-back sanctuary run by the heart-centered duo Jill and Bob Ruttenberg. From the nourishing meals prepared by their wonderful staff to the heartfelt hospitality they extended throughout our stay, Jill and Bob made this journey unforgettable. We are deeply grateful for their warm welcome—and their invitation to return.

This retreat marks the beginning of CCJ’s Healing Retreat series, with future offerings during winter / spring travel season. Stay tuned for our next adventure in Central America: Guatemala! There, we’ll explore Mayan cosmovision, traditional saunas ("temascales"), as always daily yoga, coffee tours, and women-led weaving cooperatives.

The journey of healing continues—and we hope you’ll be part of it.
