Sacred Places, Spiritual People
Sponsored by Lesley University
June 22-July 6, 2010
On this journey we will visit contemporary Vietnam following centuries of struggle for independence from Chinese domination, French colonialism, and the Vietnam/American war. Today Vietnam is in a period of self-confidence and is rebuilding rapidly. We also visit Laos and Angkor Wat, Cambodia. The history of the three countries is interwoven and we will explore this historic interconnection. Much of life in these countries has traditionally been living on the water...whole communities living on boats, on rivers and bays. We will spend time on boats in Vietnam and Laos to personally experience this unique lifestyle. We will have time to interact with local Vietnamese, particularly students, and learn about traditional belief systems based on ancient Confucian values, Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism, ancestor worship, and mother worship. Along the way we will visit NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and social entrepreneurs who are working to make Vietnam and Laos a better place. Led by Southeast Asia expert Han Andre Iluk and professors Neal Klein and Jan Wall. Read more...
